The story

Hello, we're Emptyhead.

Emptyhead Digital was founded by Matt Edwards in 2008, and we've spent the years since building websites for the arts: major musicals, touring productions, orchestras, festivals, and the not-for-profits doing quiet, important work in between.

Most of our clients are artists, producers and arts administrators. They're brilliant at what they do, and what they do is rarely websites. So a big part of our job is translation. We turn digital jargon into plain English, big scary projects into manageable steps, and good shows into things the world can find, love and buy tickets to.

Alongside direct client work, we partner with strategy and marketing agencies as their embedded development team: design, builds, email and campaign assets that slot into bigger campaigns without fuss. Whether you're a grassroots company or a national brand, the approach is the same. Listen properly, build carefully, stick around.

Fair question

Why the name?

Emptyhead Digital isn't just a catchy name. It's a bit of wordplay on my initials: Matthew Thomas Edwards, MT Edwards. Mash them together and MTED sounds suspiciously like "Emptyhead". So I figured, why not embrace it?

After all, who doesn't want a digital studio that starts every job with a clear head.

How we like to work

Easy to work with, on purpose.

The work matters, but so does how the process feels. Most of our clients are in the middle of busy seasons with hard deadlines, so we keep projects calm, clear and genuinely enjoyable to be part of. Here's what that looks like in practice.

  • We listen as much as we talk

Every project starts with your story, your audience and your deadline, not our portfolio. The best brief is a conversation.

  • Plain English, always

You will never need a glossary to read one of our emails. If something is technical, explaining it clearly is our job, not yours.

  • Quietly useful

We notice the things that need doing and do them without ceremony. The broken link, the slow page, the email template nobody owns.

  • In it for the long run

Most clients come for one project and stay for years. We'd rather be your web team for a decade than a vendor for a season.

The people

Two of us, plus good company.

Matt Edwards

Founder / Head of Development

Born and raised in Melbourne, I hold a Commerce Degree from Deakin University, specialising in Marketing and Electronic Commerce, and an Arts Degree from Edith Cowan University majoring in Music Theatre at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). That mix of creative and commercial has shaped everything I've done since.

I've worked as a Front-End Developer at marketing and advertising agencies across Australia, including ACMN in Sydney and Out of the Square in Newcastle. In 2008, I founded Emptyhead Digital, which has since become a trusted partner in the entertainment industry, working with Australia's top agencies and clients to create websites for venues, arts organisations, and major touring musicals.

I currently live in the Adelaide Hills with my wife and two children, but often pop up in other cities.
